I think he is talking about one of those external hard disk drives that
you
plug into a USB ****t, not a USB flash drive.
As far as recovering data from the external drive, it all depends on what
"failed today while he was trying to restore his data" means.
- Is the USB unit totally dead?
- Does the hard drive spin up?
- Is the USB drive recognized by the PC you're plugging into?
- Have you tried more than one USB ****t on the PC?
- Is ANY data visible on the USB drive? Are some files okay and some
not?
- Can you plug the USB drive into another PC? Does it work okay there?
I haven't opened up too many of those USB hard drives, but I expect they
contain a standard hard drive (with an IDE interface), and some kind of
power supply and IDE-to-USB interface. If the IDE-to-USB interface has
failed, the hard drive itself could be okay, and maybe you can just
install
it on a spare IDE channel of the new PC to get the data off?
Good luck!

So the files were on the flash and are now gone?
