HELPFUL HINTS from :
Coquitlam Hardwood Flooring (aka) ALLHARDWOODFLOOR LTD.
recoating your hardwood floors every few years is highly recommended. If
you
do this before the finish has a chance to wear through, it will prolong
the
life of your floor and reduce the need for re-sanding
.. Will my oil based finish hardwood floor change color over time?
Yes, you can expect to see a difference in the shade of your hardwood
floor
over a period of time.
The cause is from direct or indirect ultra-violet sunlight rays. You will
notice the difference mostly in areas of the floor covered with a rug.
It's
best to move the rugs in your home around from time to time in order to
minimize this.
By using our water-based finishes, which have built in UV inhibiters, you
can greatly delay this natural occurrence.
Will GlitsaT yellow over time? Swedish finish Glitsa(tm,) has a small
amount
of amber tone to it But never oxidizes like a polyurethane finish.
STAIRS RESANDING REFINI****NG
We only sand the actual treads or steps .
The risers of the staircase. We never sand spindles, railings or
stringers.
This is far beyond the scope of floor work
Most risers - the back, vertical face of the stairs - are covered with a
very thin veneer over plywood. Because this veneer is extremely thin, it
can't
be sanded. You have a couple of choices as to what you can do with the
surface of the riser.
First, the most common option that our clients are choosing is to paint
them
with a durable paint that matches the stringers (the wood side part of the
stairs). This is a very popular look among designers and can be found in
all
of the latest home trend magazines. It's a very classy look that has the
benefit of visually opening the staircase providing an airy, spacious
feeling.
You also have the option of re-veneering them but painting the risers is a
far cheaper choice. It's also much easier to maintain the risers down the
road as all you will need to do is give them a fresh coat of paint every
few
years if needed.
The person quoting the work will also be working on your floors.
This is a great benefit for a couple of reasons. First off, you get to
size
me up and see if you even want me to be working on your floors.
Secondly, it cuts out any misunderstandings that could come up if you're
dealing with an estimator and then a separate employee on the actual job.
With us it's all me, me, me... in the good sense.
Thirdly, who wouldn't want the owner of the company to be working on your
floors? It's his company; he's the one with his reputation on the line.
He's
going to make sure the jobs done right.
We only use high quality, long lasting products.
What's the use of spending all that time and money having your floors
refinished if they're only going to last a few years. Cheap, low quality
finish will wear out very quickly with average traffic.
As we talked about above, we've tested many types of finish systems and we
only offer ones that we know will look good years down the road and can
stand up to abuse. Dominately Glitsa TSwedish finish
Troweling of filler and finish is an ancient art and is the standard of
all
high quality fini****ng.
Trowelling cuts off raised grain,it cleans, it fills divots, cracks and
voids with finish, It fills scalloped soft grain with finish allowing the
afterwards mopped coats to sit on top and give the floor a much flatter

Vancouver Hardwood floors(aka) ALLHARDWOODFLOOR LTD.
Uses three different sawing methods on our premium site finished Hardwood
flooring
Plainsawn
Plainsawn (also called flat sawn) is the most common cut. It produces the
maximum yield and therefore costs less. Plain-sawn lumber has varying
grain
orientations. The grain can run parallel, diagonal or perpendicular to the
face of the board. This variation can cause un-even drying which makes the
board more likely to warp (cup, twist, and bow). The board will also
shrink
somewhat in thickness as well as width. A plainsawn floorboard contains
more
variation than the other two cuts because grain patterns resulting from
the
growth rings are more obvious.
Quartersawn
Quarter sawing produces flooring with annual growth rings running almost
straight along the face of the board. Quartersawn flooring materials tend
to
remain flat despite changes in moisture content and are less likely to
shrink. Quarter-sawn flooring also has superior ability to hold paints and
stains. This process costs more because quarter sawing requires more time
and skill to cut and it yields less board footage from each log.
Riftsawn
Riftsawn is similar to quartersawing, but the cut is made at a slightly
different angle.
Why go to a company who only uses laquer sanding sealer and poly urethane
which goes completely amber or yellow after only a few years reducing the
contrast to a sea of marmalade Coquitlam hardwood floors (aka)

Put our brand on your Project
Wood flooring will perform best when the interior environment is
controlled
to stay within a relative humidity range 30% to 50% and a temperature
range
60F to 80F. The chart below indicates the moisture content wood will
likely
have at any given combination of temperature and humidity. Note that
equilibrium moisture contents in the recommended temperature/humidity
range
(green area) coincide with the 6% to 9% range within which most hardwood
flooring is manufactured. Although some movement can be expected even
between 6% and 9%, wood can expand and shrink dramatically outside that
range.

Refini****ng Your Hardwood Floor Yourself
If you can no longer bring the sparkling touch to your loved hardwood
floor
even after endless wa****ng and poli****ng it may be the time to consider
its
refini****ng.
While refini****ng your hardwood floor is not as hard as you might think
the
key to its success is preparation. Although hardwood floor refini****ng is
relatively easy job it can be quite dusty and messy.
If you are not quite sure about your refini****ng skills we will gladly
help.
If you are a skilled handyman then read on.
Preparing For Hardwood Floor Refini****ng
To prepare your house or an apartment for refini****ng you should consider
the following: remove curtains and blinds, seal off all adjoining openings
with plastic, and close doors, then seal them with rolled-up damp towels.
These simple precautions will make cleaning up a lot easier the
refini****ng
is done.
Essential Repairs
To achieve the best results, all the repairs that are needed to be done on
your hardwood floor should be dealt with before you begin the refini****ng.
Make sure to inspect the entire floor area - check carefully for cracks,
protruding nails and squeaky boards.
Solid Wood flooring comes in three basic types:
1. Strip flooring accounts for the majority of installations. Strips
usually
are 2-1/4 inches wide, but also come in widths ranging from 1-1/2 inches
to
3-1/4 inches. They are installed by nailing to the subfloor.
2. Plank flooring boards are at least 3 inches wide. They may be screwed
to
the subfloor as well as nailed. Screw holes can be covered with wooden
plugs.
3. Parquet flooring comes in standard patterns of 6" x 6" blocks.
Specialty
patterns may range up to 36" square units. Parquet often achieves dramatic
geometric effects of special design patterns.
A solid hardwood floor can be installed on a concrete slab as long as the
floor is on or above ground level. They can be sanded and refinished over
several generations of use.
Solid wood flooring expands and contracts with changes in your home's
relative humidity. Normally, installers compensate for this movement by
leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall. Base moulding is
the traditional "cover-up" for this gap.
Engineered Wood
Made of several layers of different woods or different grades of the same
wood stacked and glued together under heat and pressure. Engineered wood
flooring is less likely to be affected by changes in humidity and can be
installed above, on, or below ground level. Some engineered wood floors
with
thicker top layers can be sanded many times.
Unfinished wood floors:
With a job-site finish you get a perfectly smooth finish.
Unfinished hardwood allows you to match existing woodwork by staining it
to
blend.
Custom colours, generally 2-3 coats of finish
This can be fairly messy, takes several days
Prefinished wood floors
Usually installs in less than a day
Less messy than job-site finish
Limited to manufacturer's colours
Manufacturers can apply 7-10 coats of finish
Factory finishes are extremely wear resistant
Some manufacturers add aluminum oxide for additional durability
Today's factory finishes are much easier to care for than the old waxed
finishes.
Prefinished trims are not an exact match to the floor.
Wood Finishes
UV-cured: Factory finishes cured with Ultra Violet lights versus heat.
Polyurethane: A clear, tough and durable finish applied as a wear layer.
Acrylic-urethane: A slightly different chemical make up from Polyurethane
with the same benefits.
Aluminum Oxide: Added to the urethane finish for increased abrasion
resistance of the wear layer.
Ceramic: Advanced technology that allows the use of ceramics to increase
the
abrasion resistance of the wear layer.
Acrylic Impregnated: Acrylic monomers are injected into the cell structure
of the wood to give increased hardness and then finished with a wear layer
over the wood.
Squeaky boards can be fixed by driving a nail, at an angle, into the joist
below. This will draw the boards down tightly onto the joist while angling
the nail will prevent the board from riding up again.
Boards that are badly split will need to be replaced. Firstly, drill into
the broken section, and then cut out with a jigsaw. Ideally, the
floor-board
should be removed and rejoined at the center of the joist to provide the
necessary solid sup****t. To insert a replacement board you will need to
remove the underside of the tongue, and then pre-drill the board ends to
avoid splitting and creating more filling work.
Sanding and Final Preparation
The next step in your preparation for hardwood floor refini****ng is to
remove the existing finish. However, the idea is not to remove all of it,
but rather to cut back only the top layer and produce a clean,
scratch-free
surface.
For a large floor area, renting a rotary orbital sander makes the job much
easier. However, the edges of the floor (adjacent to the skirting boards)
are best done with an orbital sander which is much easier to control.
For tight and little corners (such as around the base of architraves) a
mouse sander is the most effective tool. When you are done with sanding
all
the dust must be removed completely. Do this by vacuuming and then wa****ng
down the entire surface with mineral turpentine.
Lastly, Applying the Finish
Before applying the new finish it is a good idea to check that it is
compatible with the existing one. Determining what finish you have is not
always easy. If you applied the original finish yourself it is OK, but if
you don't know what's there at the moment you will need to do a small
test.
Most floors are finished with an oil-based polyurethane finish. If the new
finish is not compatible you will immediately see a bubbling and
blistering
reaction.
To apply the new finish use a lambs wool mop. With each stroke slightly
overlapped you will avoid a "tram-line" effect. Keep coverage as
consistent
as possible and avoid letting the applicator dry out at the end of each
pass.
Keep the room and the flooring area well ventilated during the application
and drying process. Read on the manufacturer's recommended re-coating
times,
sand lightly and then apply your second and third coats while following
the
same procedure.
ALLHARDWOODFLOOR LTD. Can Help
If all went well then you have successfully completed your hardwood floor
refini****ng. Now, just take extra care not to scratch the flooring when
moving your furniture back in.
And of course, if this job seems too complicated to you or if you are not
so
sure about your skills we will gladly help.
AHF LTD.COQUITLAM, BURNABY, VANCOUVER offers ALL the different types of
floor finish for your wood floor, SWEDISH ( acid curing or conversion
varnish) , Watreborne polyurethane. Each type has its advantages, and
understanding the differences between the two will help you to make the
best
decision. Whichever you choose, it is im****tant to note that the single
most
im****tant factor in how long the finish will last is not what type of
finish
is used, but how much and what kind of traffic the floor will see.
Whichever finish you choose, you can be confident that the products are of
the highest quality and have years of successful use and wear behind them.
Regardless of finish type, the most im****tant factors in determining the
life of your floor's finish are the degree of wear and tear it will see
and
how fastidiously it is maintained. A home with two adults and no children
or
pets, for example, may not need its floors maintained beyond regular
cleaning for as many as twelve years; a home with two adults, two children
and a dog may need a maintenance coating within two years, or even sooner.
If there is ever a question about when maintenance coating is needed,
simply
give us a call, and we will be happy to take a look and advise you
accordingly. With proper cleaning and maintenance, your floors may never
need to be sanded again.
Swedish Finish
Swedish finish was developed in the early 1950's in Scandinavia and
quickly
gained popularity in Europe. It has been the industry standard here in the
British Columbia for about 55 years, probably because it is a truly 'no
wax'
finish. The only maintenance required is light damp mopping, as opposed to
the semi-annual waxing and buffing associated with sealer/ wax and
polyurethane finish systems. Swedish finish also has a reputation for
durability unmatched by all but a few heavy-duty commercial grade
finishes.
highly volatile and toxic, and requires special precautions, including
customers planning to be off the premises for at least a day or two after
the final coat is applied, as well as removing pets and plants from the
work
area for the same duration. We may also ask that appliances with pilot
lights be turned off or disconnected prior to the commencement of work.
Please be prepared to re-light any pilot lights that we may have turned
off.
Light foot traffic may resume and furniture may be replaced after 24 to 48
hours, but the finish is not fully cured for up to 60 days, and therefore
area rugs should not be put back on the floor for as long as is tolerable
(if areas are covered before the end of this curing period, the covered
areas will cure more slowly, and could result in more pronounced color
differences between exposed and covered areas). Swedish finish is a two-up
to five coat procedure.
The primary disadvantage of the Swedish finish is the powerful and
unpleasant odor. We generally apply 2 coats of Swedish finish on
successive
days, and ALLHARDWOODFLOOR LTD. always recommends vacating the premises
while these coats of finish are being applied. Sensitivity to the solvents
in the finish varies greatly from individual to individual, and some
customers have re****ted a lingering odor for as long as a week after the
final coat is applied. The majority of our customers who choose Swedish
finish, however, find that if the house can be aired out soon after the
final coat is dry, they are able to move back in the next day.
Waterborne Finish
For many of our customers (almost a quarter, in fact), the Swedish finish
and the fumes and inconvenience associated with it prompt them to choose a
waterborne finish. Waterborne floor finish technology has only been around
for about fifteen years, so these finishes do not share the time-tested
reputation for durability that Swedish finish enjoys. In spite of this, we
have had great success with waterborne products for many years, and as the
technology becomes more and more advanced, we expect waterborne floor
finishes to ultimately eclipse Swedish finish in both popularity and
availability.
Waterborne finish is an air-drying urethane-acrylic emulsion. Waterborne
finish technology is a relatively recent innovation, and therefore
waterborne finish products have yet to earn the same reputation for
durability that Swedish finish enjoys. However, we at ALL HARDWOOD FLOOR
feel that the waterborne finish products we use are at the leading edge of
this relatively new technology, and these products will give you results
very similar to the results we achieve with Swedish finish. The primary
advantage of waterborne finish products is that they do not contain the
same
solvents that Swedish finish does, and are therefore much less toxic and
allow our customers to get back into their homes a little sooner. Most
residential floors require two coats of waterborne finish, and upon
completion of the final coat, normal foot traffic may resume after 24
hours.
Waterborne floor finishes are also available for purchase for
do-it-yourself
maintenance coating, which can help keep down long-term maintenance costs.
(Swedish finish is not available for purchase except to licensed
contractors.) Ease of application also makes waterborne floor finishes the
best choice for customers who anticipate doing maintenance coating
themselves. Waterborne finishes vary slightly in appearance from Swedish
finish as well. There is a subtle difference in color, which is difficult
to
characterize, so we generally encourage our customers to make an
appointment
to visit our showroom to look at samples. The waterborne finish can also
appear 'rougher' or 'less smooth' than the Swedish finish. For customers
who
may not find the 'rougher' look acceptable, an additional coat of
waterborne
finish is recommended. There is an additional charge for additional coats
of
finish.
Regardless of the type of finish you choose, the single most im****tant
factor determining how long the finish will last on your floor is what
type
and the degree of traffic to which your floor is subjected. A home with 2
adults, 2 children and a dog, for example, will need its floors maintained
much sooner and with greater frequency than a single-occupant, no-pet
household.

ALLHARDWOODFLOOR LTD Please take a moment to thoroughly read the following
information about new wood floor installation.
MATERIAL CHOICES
We understand that a new wood floor is a major investment that will last a
lifetime. It is our wish that you make an informed decision to find the
product that best suits your needs. We encourage our customers to view a
variety of wood types before making a choice. if you know what type of
material you would like, we will come to your jobsite.
NAIL-DOWN FLOORING MATERIALS
Oak is the most popular and economical nail-down hardwood flooring
material
in use today, but there are countless other varieties of wood flooring,
including maple, ash, birch, hickory-pecan, walnut, Brazilian cherry,
American cherry and vertical-grain fir. The most common dimension for new
wood flooring materials is 2 ¼" x ¾", but other sizes are also available.
Please ask to speak to Ken Moersch regarding the characteristics of
different wood species (color, durability, dimensional stability, etc.).1
PRE-FINISHED AND ENGINEERED FLOORING MATERIALS
There is an ever-growing number of pre-finished and engineered flooring
materials available for applications where nail-down flooring is not
appropriate. Some of these products are designed to be glued to the
substrate, while others are designed to 'float' on a layer of closed-cell
foam padding. ALL HARDWOOD FLOOR LTD. is a licensed retailer for many of
these products, and we would be happy to make an appointment to show you
the
wide variety of styles and product choices.
MATERIAL STORAGE AND HANDLING
MATERIAL ACCLIMATIZATION
We prefer to store new wood on-site for at least one week prior to the
installation to allow the wood to acclimatize to the temperature and
moisture conditions of the house. This acclimatization will help minimize
expansion and contraction in the future. We INSIST that the jobsite be
maintained at a temperature no lower than 65 degrees Fahrenheit from the
time the wood is delivered until the job is completed and new wood CANNOT
be
stored in a basement or garage - Cannot be staored whe active drywall is
going on in the environment any exceptions to these requirements may risk
the ultimate quality of the finished product, and will make it impossible
