While I don't recall seeing a FAQ or anything describing the newsgroups 
I posted in, all of them are generally for posting items for sale or 
requests for items.  Discussions related to the item are natural, 
however your comment had nothing to do with the item.  Each newsgroup 
has a topic, usually identified by some sort of FAQ, however the name of 
the newsgroup is usually an good indicator of the topic.

My post was made in newsgroups with a location and ".forsale", 
indicating the topic is the barter of items. As such, your comment is 
wildly off-topic as it had nothing to do with the item for sale. Nowhere 
did I say "don't comment at all", I was merely requesting people stay on 
topic.  Which is a natural, acceptable request when the topic is clearly 
indicated in the name of the newsgroup.
