You want a phono cartridge. Either moving magnet (Grado's are great for
the money in basic systems) or moving coil (far more expensive, sound
far better and have lower output so your preamp or power amp will have
to have lower noise and higher gain. If your speakers are efficient
this helps too. If you use a moving coil stage, it usually makes the
sound worse. The input impedance should be 50k.

More im****tantly - it sounds way better. If you set up your system
properly and listen carefully. Tweeters at ear level on rigid stands
with spikes to go through the carpet, grills removed, speakers NOT toed
in, speakers as far as possible from the back wall (6 feet minimum for
good imaging) and you sitting at one end of the room for maximum bass
with the wall behind you treated to absorb the midrange and high
frequencies. THEN you're ready for a musical event!
