They actually did make a G2, and a G1 as well, although they were not
marketed under that name. The G stands for the generation of powerpc
processor, and corresponds to a less user friendly powerpc processor
family
names. At some point apple realized that "604e" wasn't a very memorable
name to the consumer so they came up with this scheme:
G3 = PowerPC 750 family of processors
G4 = PowerPC 74xx processor family
G5 = PowerPC 970 processor family
1st and 2nd generation power macs used PPC 60X processors. Arguably 601
family processors correspond to the 1st generation, whereas 604 family
corresponds to G2. However, it's not clear where 603 fits into this
schema,
as it was a lower power CPU for laptops.
